The Challenge

A client approached the Clarksons offshore shipbroking team because they had found themselves about to take a vessel onhire without needing it for 30 days, potentially longer. The vessel was committed over a year in advance for the work, with contracts having already been signed. As the onhire date approached, the charterer was experiencing some delays in their schedule. The vessel was highly specialised due to the nature of the work it was performing. This type of vessel typically requires months of lead time before a campaign can be configured properly for the end client. As such, the client asked Clarksons for assistance.

The Solution

The Clarksons team in Houston used their wide network of contacts to identify a sub-lease opportunity for the vessel. After speaking with countless charterers, the renewable energy broking team found the perfect match for the Vessel. With extensive experience in contract management, in just two weeks the team was able to successfully turn around a completed BIMCO agreement, as well as a charter suspension agreement with the incumbent charterer.

The Results

The vessel successfully transitioned to working with the new charterer. The vessel made it to location ahead of schedule. Clarkson’s solution saved the incumbent charterer over 30 days of vessel hire. The original charterer and owner agreed that when the charterer needed the vessel back, they would provide 15 days’ notice, giving the owner time to demobilize the existing charterers’ equipment and personnel.

Client Feedback

“It was because of Clarkson’s involvement that this opportunity to suspend the charterparty for 30 days was possible. Not only did they successfully manage this subcharter quickly and efficiently, they helped us secure the vessel at a great rate in a competitive market over one and a half years ago. Clarksons is truly dedicated to both parties of every contract they sign, and they remain enthusiastically and pragmatically involved from start to finish.”
